OSCAR DE LA RENTA
Another 80s revival, it felt like we were slap bang in the middle of a Dynasty set. Big hair, glossy lips and bold colours meant that the ‘Oscar’ woman was going to walk into the fall boardroom with power status, even with no shoulder pads. Oversize layered curb chains, wrapped wire big stone necklaces and oversize cabochon-filled paste brooches were offset against bold brights, bouclé knits and faux fur. The return of the diamanté brooch clip adds a bit of pizzazz to his evening wear, irrespective of where you place it…
RODARTE
Remaining true to the ethos of the show and just as the garments were embellished with tufts of goat’s hair and long fringed yarns, the jewellery reflected the same ethereal charm. Wool and fabric remnants wrapped around the arms of the models who appeared to be sleepwalking reminded us momentarily of the maquiladora workers going to the factory in the middle of the night. The collection of salvaged swathes of fabric, the dripping candles, hand-woven blankets and lace leggings reflected a story and one true to the Mexican heritage of the Mulleavy sisters.
PHILLIP LIM:
Reduced minimalism is what comes to mind when reflecting on Phillip Lim’s show except for the rather lavish metallic brocade-like detailing sewn onto the clothes. It seemed that oversize gold embellishments attached to the garments meant that it was all thought through from the beginning. No add-ons – the garment is a jewel in itself which reflects Lim’s approach to "paring down to the essence".
