Milan Spring Summer 2010

Leaving London behind and moving onto Milan where “Bond girl” meets scuba; underwear is the new outerwear and Deconstructivism stirs again in the form of sheered hems and exposed finishes. We turn to the designers who reveal the season’s jewels on the catwalk.

Giorgio Armani

Oversize gemstones worn on the ear or as brooches dominated the Armani jewellery scene in Milan. The blue transparent cabochon cut stones create an illusion of deep pools of water. What more could we ask for when, after all, “Bond girl” meets “Scuba” prevails on the catwalk

Gucci

Gucci favoured the more industrial-meets-tribal influence in accessories, with neckpieces dominating the look. The “rope rigging” inspired detailing in clothing is reflected in the style of the neckwear. Flat, graphic pendants are suspended from articulated chain. Orange and cobalt are used as accent colours against a monochrome palette. Black and white contrasts add to the striking geometric silhouette.

Marni

It’s a big season for oversize gemstones; here Marni explored the appeal of opaque roughly cut pieces set against textured surfaces. The nude palette is a seasonal update with interesting bangle silhouettes stacked high.

Still with Marni, we couldn’t help but notice the dominance of the double drop earring seen here in mustard and teal, important accent colours in the Marni collection

Bottega Veneta

Metal work at Bottega Veneta is noteworthy and exciting. The metal cut out is organic, giving the pierced forms a seaweed-like appearance. The round cabochon in mustard and ivory set boldly against gunmetal is the perfect accent to the neutral palette seen in the garments. Earrings, chokers and elongated necklaces – Bottega Veneta has it all.
