In stark contrast to the bright jewel tones on the catwalk, many of the spring/summer 2011 collections flirted with shades of white and some were in fact a complete whitewash.

Dolce & Gabbana’s collection for example was inspired by a ‘hope chest’, with virginal whites taking to the runway; whilst Carolina Herrera’s collection showed off the drama of a monochrome palette. Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen developed the concept of a plain white canvas into a plethora of textures with haberdashery-inspired layering and embroidered embellishments.
