JEWELLERY TRENDS A/W 2011 AT LONDON FASHION WEEK

HOLLY FULTON

Holly’s inspiration for her A/W 2011 collection was Coco Chanel on a visit to Scotland with her beau, the Duke of Westminster. The playful twist of heritage tweed, modern day geometry and her signature deco graphic means that her jewels are charged with wit and the avant garde. With Swarovski crystal and Perspex dominating on that score, Fulton leaves us with a lingering impression of red lips and lacquered nails with a hint of sky blue bling. Jewellery Trend Alert: Op Art jewels, co-ordinated bangles and integrated jewellery-wear.

For the design duo Benjamin and Edward, their A/W 2011 collection showed glimpses of Coco Chanel’s ethos of designing clothes for women who don’t need approval from men. There is an overwhelming sense of folksy cool and girl power love, where cable-knit, red fleece and knickerbockers dominate the runway. The witch’s hats designed by Nasir Mazhar added to the folksy image, which was further enhanced by the scooping long-chain necklaces and charm crosses adorning the outfits. Jewellery Trend Alert: Long-chain necklaces, pendant charm necklaces… and Coco Chanel.

PPQ

Not only were we intrigued by the cat-like hats and fluffy shoes that Amy Molyneaux and Percy Parker sent down the runway, but the oversize pendulum heart necklaces and the spheres caused a bit of a stir too. Amidst the glitter and ‘vamp’ of club culture cool were the vintage jewels, beaded necklaces and even a handbag encased in resin that for me, stole the show.
Jewellery Trend Alert: Encased jewels and overize pendants.

DAVID KOMA

It was a polka dot obsession and the work of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama that inspired David Koma’s collection that, up until now, has been fiercely futuristic with strong elements of architectural infusion. This year his graphic imagery was more feminine and revolved around the humble ‘spot’ in its various forms. Most noteworthy for me were the pom-pom chokers and armbands that showed versatile functionality and added the much-needed colour pop to the mostly dark palette.
Jewellery Trend Alert:
Versatile jewels that can be adapted for arm and neck.
