JEWELLERY TRENDS ON THE MILAN CATWALK

Neckwear has moved to choker style – Castiglioni doubles up single strands of chunky beads in caramel and high gloss silver. Segments of acrylic arc beads are interspersed with earth coloured opaque gems juxtaposing the two with unabashed skill. The signature black ribbon tie is still evident with oversize glass droplets suspended from layered big bead chokers. Marni’s exceptional colour sense and playful avant-garde mean that he successfully marries polished surfaces with opaque shapes and structured chain with organic pendant charms.

Neckwear was the focus at D&G with antique-like fine chain lockets caressing the necklines of the models – reminiscent of French Renaissance portraiture with a co-ordinating ensemble of dainty earrings. The return of the purse bag and brooch blurs the boundaries between form and function – a nod to decades past – and then, just as we were settling into a sense of romantic nostalgia, the boys surprised us with a knotted web of layered chain, gold shiny hearts and metallic roses – an opulent statement showing us that more is more after all.

The scarab in various iridescent shades of blue, green and antique gold adorned the models dressed in black leather pantsuits and purple and green metallic satin dresses. Maier showcases the double layered choker, multi-layered chain with round beads stacked in shaded combinations, statement cuffs and pupae-like earrings. The colours of the beetle seem to be reflected in the jewels as well as the buckle-on leather carapace tops with corset detailing – a fascination with the ancient beetle seems to have inspired Maier’s collection. Perhaps the fact that the scarab is symbolic for ‘rebirth’ in Ancient Egypt is a deliberate attempt to rejuvenate and inspire hope in the midst of a recession.
