With a couple of notable exceptions (Danielle Scutt’s Freedom-designed golden trove and Holly Fulton’s architecturally-inspired beauties) the jewellery on London’s A/W 2011 catwalks was surprisingly subdued this season. Fortunately for those of us with a passion for the shiny stuff, the scene on the capital’s streets was a different story.

Perhaps as a reaction to the grim weather, the sheer diversity, imagination and gusto demonstrated by the capital’s jewellery-touting girls and boys were more than a match for the grey skies and spare catwalks.

Colour, irreverence and imagination were the watchwords informing a mix ‘em up mood which saw vintage finds thrown together with high street and home-made trinkets to create a look that says ‘London’ through and through.

Theming (jewellery and garments selected to match) is an exciting new direction to watch, and if there was a focus on one part of the body, it’s the chest, where necklaces assumed big, bold cartoon-like proportions.

It’s no secret that designers look to the street for inspiration, and London in particular draws the fashion world’s greedy gaze. That being the case, we eagerly await next year’s return to form for catwalk jewellery everywhere.
