My best friend and I got a bit fed up of the whole Valentine’s day maddness and said we’d have our own valentines day without our boyfriends.
It was so much better, and with a lot less pressure. We made dinner together, then ate by candlelight and watched our favorite films, bought each other a present that we actually wanted (jewelery- that wasn’t picked out by our unfortunately tasteless boyfriends of the time) and drank an obscene amount of red wine and danced in our pants. We woke up the next day heaped in a mess with our arms around each other, with lovehearts stuck in our hair. It was ace, and we left each other laughing at ourselves, and more in love with each other than ever!!x

Every Valentine’s Day when I realize I’m married to the best guy ever– and usually we aren’t together, so that’s as good as it gets. Won’t be this year either, darn it.

On valentines day I finally got the courage to write my best friend , (who I had been secretly in love with for 5 years) a letter telling him how I felt. I called him round to mine to supposedly blow off valentines day but made him read the letter in front of me as I needed to know how he felt. He read the letter and said that i was very brave risking our friendship and appreciated my honesty AND that he felt the same! That was one of the best moments of my life!! We are now married with a 5 month old baby :)

Well, not sure that this will beat anyone’s but… it’s a Valentine’s day recollection, so here goes…
For our first Valentine’s day, my beloved rented a video for us to watch, snuggled up on the sofa. Would your first choice have been his? Tarantino’s ‘Reservoir Dogs’ is perhaps not the obvious choice, but, well, it was early days. So there we were, under a deluge of violence and swearing, just the two of us, until a panicked phonecall from my mother saying that there was a couple (of ne’er-do-wells) sitting Outside her House in a Car with the Engine Running! Less reluctantly then if we had been watching Casablanca, I dashed round to her house to find her on the phone to the police! I was able to let them know that on not too close inspection, on this night of St Valentine, the couple in the car had not been plotting the type of breaking and entering that was going to require any intervention from law enforcement… Still, at least Mr Pink, Mr White and Mr Black all kept their ears and, in spite of this rather untraditional Valentine’s evening (that perhaps even set the style of our major celebrations!)… we have been happily married for 14 years…!

Meeting the right person can take a while, but when it happens you know, I mean you really know. For me it has been over 23 years through good times and bad, but I would never give up on him.

I believe that almost everyone has some amazing memories and stories about their Valenine’s Day. I want to share mine with you.
To be honest, I’ve never liked that day. I was considering as something artificial. I was looking at all those red and pink decorations, roses, heart-shaped chocolates, kissing couples, etc. with some kind of ‘pity’. I was always thinking that you should tell and show someone you love what you feel every day, not only try your best on February 14th.
Things have changed a bit when I met a wonderful man. He wasn’t a huge fan of Valentine’s Day but he made something funny for a February 14th. He booked a table at the restaurant, we had a dinner & champane and finally he gave me a small box. When I opened it I saw ‘pink plastic girly ring with red heart’. It looked like from the toy shop. I started laughing. He put the ring on my finger with words ‘to the one I love’. I was wearing it all evening and all following week. My friends at work were asking what ‘s that and I was only smiling mysteriously.
I also realized that it is nothing wrong with Valentine’s Day if you treat it as an another great chance to show your feeling to the one you love.

I tweeted (@bridgetmcnulty) but this ring has my name all over it, so I figured a double entry couldn’t hurt…
My favourite Valentine’s moment so far was a few years back – my first Valentine’s with my now-fiance. He whisked me off on the back of his scooter to a sugarcane field in KwaZulu Natal (South Africa), where he’d packed a picnic for us to eat as the sun went down… There was nobody else around but the two of us, and the sugarcane glowed all golden in the sunset. I had baked a heart-shaped cake for us to celebrate, and it was one of the most joy-full evenings I’ve ever had!
