Club Tropicana

Just back from a trip to Madrid and between the 34 degree heat, non-stop sunshine and a host of colour popping window displays from the likes of Kenzo, Loewe and Longchamp – loving those Mary Katrantzou totes, btw! – we’re in the mood for a tropical trip.

But whilst the transatlantic paradise destinations may have to wait, there’s no stopping us plotting our beach babe jewellery now. Our current picks? This fun parrot ring by Juicy Couture, in-the-pink earrings by Betsey Johnson and Marni, a stunning Roberto Cavalli necklace, and Isharya‘s peacock feather ring.

Now – who’s for a pina colada?

SS12 Jewellery Trend: Under the Sea

Style the Look

ss12 jewelry trends adorn london jewelry trends blog
LBD & ME
The final post in our  LBD & Me style series on Adorn London is based around Seaworld, a SS12 jewellery trend highlighted on our Jewellery Trends page. The idea behind the LBD & Me series, is to show you how jewellery can transform an outfit and how the same LBD can be accessorised differently to reflect a different mood or look.

Yves St Laurent suede platform starfish wedges from Net-a-Porter and Lanvin’s shell-shaped Minaudiere evening bag from Lanvin will leave little doubt that your look is inspired by the ocean. But as with everything we wear, life would just not be the same without dazzling jewels to add the finishing touches.

EASY STEP-BY-STEP:
SS12 jewellery trends under the sea adorn london jewellery trends blog
1.Take the same simple black dress and decide on the colour palette to support the theme. In the case of Seaworld, I have moved away from the watery shades of lilac and periwinkle blue and instead focused on the coral reef  colour palette as inspiration.

2. Look at the four main jewellery categories: Earrings, Neckwear, Wristwear and Rings and make sure your complement includes at least two of these pieces.

3. Think about the materials and colour ways in your jewellery repetoire that will support your look. In this case it’s golden lustres, oxidised metal, glossy reds and oranges and porous coral-like surfaces.

I would layer up the necklaces; with Bex Rox’s dainty sea horse resting on Kenneth Jay Lane’s coral fan. Wendy Yue needs no introduction, her extraordinary statement cocktail rings are masterful and tell a story beyond a thousand words. I would leave out wristwear and focus on the neckline with the ring completing our look.

SHOPPING LIST:

1. Red enamel coral necklace by Kenneth Jay Lane at Kabiri
2. Seahorse pendant by Bex Rox at Boticca
3. Fantasie Garden of Coral ring by Wendy Yue at Annoushka

Jessie J Jewellery Adorn London Jewelry Trends blog
Mawi large dome hematite earrings with spikes; Mawi triple enamel panther necklace; Mawi ‘Mini Mouse’ pendant

Pop icon Jessie J is a longtime fan of London-based Mawi’s designer fashion jewellery, wearing the brand’s statement jewels to high profile events like the Grammys, Glamour ‘Woman of the Year’ and A-list shows at London Fashion Week. No surprise, then, that the rock chick and judge on The Voice wore a juicy foil and crystal statement neckpiece from Mawi’s SS12 collection on Saturday night. Hmm… we likey.

Alex Monroe ‘Best of British’ competition winner

Firstly a HUGE big thank you to all of you who took the time to write your entries  to win the ‘All the Best’ necklace from Alex Monroe’s ‘Best of British’ collection and tell us and all the readers of Adorn London from around the globe what ‘quintessentially British’ means to you. We loved every single one of your comments and even noticed a few recurrent themes.

Scenes from the ‘Best of British’ press launch at the Alex Monroe jewellery boutique and Alex with his bike

We left the judging to the affable Alex Monroe here’s what he had to say: "This was a very tricky one. They were all absolutely wonderful and made me smile. But here are some of my thoughts: Jenifer Shiu top marks for your wonderful list; Paula Stewart gets the best-in-least-words-prize with her ‘sand in Cornish pasty’ comment. Brilliant and funny. Rozzy Wyatt is exactly me. Rain, dogs and too much butter! (big sigh…) And Danielle’s ‘Marmite’! I loved Lorna Ryan’s but she’s an old mate so I felt guilty about choosing hers. And a fabulous poem from Rebecca; Irene’s list was great too. Kimm’s… oh I could go on and on… "

BUT

Alex’s winner is Stephanie Prentice.

" … I don’t know what it is but there’s something about Stephanie Prentice’s apologetic encounter which just totally says Britishness to me. I laughed out loud. Very funny and right to the point. I think I’m going to have to choose this one. But actually I think everyone has done brilliantly. I loved them all. "

"A rain-soaked pavement. Sometimes as I scoot and slide through London on my Italian Vespa and nearly crash into a black cab, in that split second just before death, I have caught myself saying…’Woopsie.’ It just comes out. I aspire to something more well, inspiring or at least a proper swear word to show some grit but sigh, I’ll have to keep that in mind. Once on foot I was actually hit by a black cab- hopefully not the same one- I flew through the air, keeled over and after a great pause, shakily stood up. “Are you alright?” the cabbie asked, not sure if he should take my arm as I hobbled, he dithered a polite distance away.”Yes…fine…thank you…Sorry.” I gasped slowly with one foot in front of the other. Our apologetic encounter was very Quintessentially British. For those moments in life when I couldn’t prepare, when I was just Quintessentially me, I scraped through with a little embarrassment, humour and grace and for me that is Quintessentially British". Let’s Ear It For Wilfredo Rosado

There has been much debate at Adorn HQ re which was the winning jewellery look from Sunday night’s Met Ball extravaganza. We all have our faves but for what it’s worth I was delighted to spot the gorgeous Jessica Alba rocking these open work pendant earrings by Puerto Rican jeweller Wilfredo Rosado, especially as I’ve had my eyes on them for a while.

Fashioned from 18ct yellow gold and studded with dainty white diamonds they’re plucked from Rosado’s current ‘Honeycomb’ collection and very sweet indeed.

SS12 Jewellery Trend: Refined Palette

Pattern clash and exuberant colour pops have been a designer favourite for a while now, and with painterly looks appearing all over the catwalks this season it seems that the vogue for statement-making style is entering an arty phase.

In New York, Prabal Gurung embellished sleek cigarette pants with drips of metallic lilac paint whilst Chris Benz daubed wide-brush ink stains on oversized jackets to stunning effect. London boy Duro Olowu gave us total-look outfits brightened by rainbow hued splashes.

But whilst those catwalk get ups appeared effortlessly cool, working this mood requires an ability to walk that fine line between ooh la la and OTT.

The good news is that by following a few simple rules you can look as pretty as a picture in no time.

jkklj.k

1. Prep the canvas: pick a garment that makes an arty statement then chose accessories that complement without overwhelming. Plain but killer heels and a dainty clutch which echoes a print detail in a subtle manner add harmony without clashing.

2. Add the finishing touches: When it come to your jewellery, avoid anything overtly patterned as this will appear too fussy. Instead select two or three pieces whose colour is a tonal match and which work with the lines of your dress. If the neck is high, swap a necklace for earrings, for example.

3. Consider the form and silhouette of each piece. Dainty and intricate will just get lost, so select pieces that are simple and architechtural. These paint drip earrings by Oscar de la Renta and the aptly named “Arty’ ring from YSL are the perfect case in point.

Jewellery trends hit the Met Ball 2012

Last night saw the great, the good and the gorgeous of the worlds of music, film and fashion assemble at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art for the 2012 Costume Institute Gala. Whilst the eyes of many were on the fabulous frocks, Adorn London had its peepers firmly fixed on the jewels. And boy, did we spot some hot hot trends.

Coloured jewels put in an appearance courtesy of Paula Patton’s lavender crystal bead earrings and January Jones’ fab deco-style turquoise cabochon choker from Cartier.

Anna Wintour also opted for colour and rocked her trademark doubled-up gemstone chokers from H. Stern whilst actress Camille Belle and supermodel Karolina Kurkova – sporting Fred Leighton earrings – showed how to pair sparkly jewels with equally sparkly attire and still look chic.

Last but not least, we loved some gals’ innovative approach to jewellery styling. Jamie King paired a Topshop frock with a Bulgari necklace turned round to fall the length of her back, Gwyneth Paltrow worked the Native American trend with a pair of dreamcatcher-style earrings and Kate Bosworth put a contemporary spin on a classic look with  a stack of diamond encrusted wristwear and lobe-spanning earrings all courtesy of Fred Leighton.

All in all, a dazzling night seems to have been had by everyone!
