Birds of a feather

It may be that you love glitz and glam or prefer something hand crafted, Adorn hopes to ruffle your feathers with these fabulous finds.

On one of my trips to Vicenza, I remember stumbling upon Le Sibille and since then have had a real appreciation for the ancient craft of micro mosaic. A ring from Le Sibille remains on my ‘wish list’ to this day. The detail that Clara Francis achieves in her bead work has a paint-by-numbers precision. I have done a bit of beadwork myself and I was totally inspired by her work when browsing the stalls at Spitalfields years ago. Lovely Pigeon’s black and white contrast and the stylised pattern make this bird brooch a unique statement piece.

The hummingbird features as a recurring image in bird- inspired jewellery. Is it their shimmering spectrum of metallic colour? Perhaps it is the sound the wings make when they hover or is it because they have more feathers per square inch than any other bird? For some avid bird watchers, it may be because of their amazing flying skills or that they can gather nectar from up to 1000 flowers per day.Whatever it is that strikes you, these little iridescent, feathered creatures have been given jewel status.

If novelty with a narrative message is your ‘thing’, look no further than Les Nereides’ Les Belles et Les Betes collection where the message often is suggested through the name of the piece. Electric Eccentricity’s ‘Sing a little song for me’ necklace means you wouldn’t necessarily have to whistle a happy tune and what about Lulu Guinness’ ‘Keep me captivated’ birdcage necklace? After all, an image can speak more than a thousand words.
