Q: Hello Juliet, please help! I sadly had all my ‘serious’ jewellery stolen recently, including my antique Russian-style engagement ring, which was a large, white gold dome, studded with tiny diamonds, with trimmings of 18ct gold and an aquamarine in the centre. Beautiful but completely impractical for everyday life. I love aquamarines and pale stones and wear a mix of silver and gold jewellery. My lovely husband wants to replace the engagement ring but this time I want something I can wear every day. We don’t want to spend a fortune as I am prone to lose things, and I am very happy to have a semi-precious stone (I love rock crystal and smokey quartz). However I do like a ring to make a statement!! Just so you know what the new ring will sit with, my wedding ring is a simple band of 18ct gold with a diamond set into it. Enough of my rambling, what do you suggest? Thank you so much!

A: Hi Jane, I am so sorry to read of your recent burglary and whilst the sentiment can never be replaced, I have had such fun seeking out the best rock crystal and smokey quartz rings I can find. I have included a rutilated crystal ring too as I love the patterns that are unique to each stone. I have gone with some of my favourite British designers (Pippa Small, Monica Vinader and EC One) and then Alexa Garner Sidaris from further afield. Personally, in these statement rings, I think that smokey quartz works best in white metal and the warmth of the gold metal works best with the clearer stones. I love the textured shank of the Monica Vinader and the irregular cut of the Pippa Small ring. I created a collage for you to show you the white and gold metal against a neutral palette – it is totally acceptable to mix metals so don’t let that get in your way. Enjoy the special moment with your hubby!
