Britannia Jewels: A trend that rocks and rules

Continuing our week-long bejewelled tribute to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, today sees us pick out some of our favourite jubilee-themed pieces. For a cutesy take on the look we’re loving these Crown Pave Stud Earrings by Juicy Couture whilst the Dentelle de Perles bracelet by Fabergé is the embodiment of the illustrious brand’s links to the Russian royal court. Also boasting regal ties – their gold was used to make the wedding rings of Wills and Kate – Clogau is behind this dainty Royal Jubilee Pendant. Italian brand Iosseliani captures the jubilee colourway with this fun Crystal Ring available at Luisa Via Roma, and Georg Jensen has launched its own tribute in the form of this graphic Diamond Jubilee Collier at Harrods.

With a wink and a nod to our slightly more irreverent faves, we couldn’t resist Theo Fennel‘s Vintage Union Jack ‘Art, Joomi Lim’s skull-bedecked Hyacinth Earrings from Matches, and Tom Binns‘ Punk Necklace which reminds us of The Sex Pistols’ cheeky antics on the occasion of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. Boasting a similarly rock’n'roll flavour we think Stephen Webster Crystal Haze ring at Astley Clarke, and this Jubilee cuff by Katherine Alexander at Atelier Mayer have just the right amount of sass.

And hot off the press this morning comes this fabulous ‘Regalia’ capsule collection from Solange Azagury-Partridge. Comprising a band, ring and earrings fashioned from 18ct gold, diamonds and coated with enamel using the traditional guilloche technique, it’s available for order online right now.

The only question now is, which pieces do we wear on the big day itself?

Jubilee Special: Tatty Devine Jewellery DIY

Diamond Jubilee special Adorn London Jewelry Blog

Diamond Jubilee Adorn London Jewelry Trends Blog
We couldn’t resist a DIY project around the Diamond Jubilee and as we assumed you would all have your tiaras by now,  we would show you how to add a little sparkle to your specs. Adorn London teamed up with British jewellery brand Tatty Devine to bring you a DIY project to mark the Diamond Jubilee inspired by their book: ‘How to Make Jewellery‘

HOW TO MAKE THE CRYSTAL FRAMES

Try hunting for old glasses in car boot sales or charity shops. We especially favour frames from old-style glasses, vintage shades, NHS spectacles, and the sort of glasses that Jarvis Cocker, your granny or Her Maj would wear.

YOU’LL NEED:

1 pair of old glasses
Soft cloth
Cotton buds
Bench vice
Hacksaw
Small flat file
Drill
1.2 mm drill bit
1 playing card
Cocktail sticks
2 small screw-in eyelets
60 cm necklace
Flat back crystal chatons
Wire cutters
Regular jump rings
2 pairs of flat-nose pliers

METHOD:

Old spectacles frames are often really dirty when you first come across them, like all the best treasure. But don’t be put off: a good clean will get rid of years of accumulated grime. Warm, soapy water is the best. Harsh cleaners can corrode some old types of plastic and may strip away any lovely details that are painted or printed on the frames.

Use a soft cloth to avoid scratches and get busy with cocktail sticks and cotton buds to get into all the nooks
and crannies.

When the clean-up is done and dusted, remove the arms of the glasses. Hold the glasses securely in a vice and, using the hacksaw, cut through the hinges as close to the frame as possible.

Using the file, smooth off any sharp edges. These will be against your skin so the smoother the better.

Hold the frames in the vice, and drill a hole approximately 3 mm deep into the top corner of the glasses frame, using the 1.2 mm size drill bit. Make sure you don’t hit the lenses or the metal inside the frames. Do the same on the other side.

Mix up the Araldite on a flyer or playing card, using the cocktail stick. Dab a small blob of glue on to the screw-in eyelets and then screw them into the holes on the frame. Leave to dry and add your own snazzy chain.

APPLYING THE CRYSTALS:

Mix up a small batch of Araldite and armed with a cut-off cocktail stick dot the glue where you want each crystal to gleam. Do a few spots at a time.

Stick a blob of beeswax to the end of another cut-off cocktail stick. This is a really easy way of picking up the crystals and popping them on the glue.

Pick up the crystals with the cut-off cocktail still loaded with beeswax. Keep dotting and sticking until your pattern is complete.  Leave to dry, and then polish with a soft cloth and a dash of white spirit.

Diamond Jubilee Trend: Top Tiaras

With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations just around the corner here in the capital, we’ve really got into the spirit of things at Adorn London HQ. What’s more, we’ve invited our friends and colleagues to join in with us by getting them to don – and in some cases even create – their very own tiaras.

What you see here is a very small selection of the brilliant photos that have been flooding our inbox all week. To see many more from the likes of Kabiri, Erickson Beamon, Tatty Devine and Kirsten Goss to name a few, check out our galleries on Facebook and Pinterest.

And while you’re at it, why not send us your own tiara snapshot. All you have to do is email a jpeg to us at: info@adorn-london.com. Go on, we know you don’t need an excuse to don some spangly headgear!

Monica Vinader Diamond Fiji bracelet giveaway

Monica Vinader fuji bangle competition on Adorn London Jewellery Trends Blog
Launching in time for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Monica Vinader introduces The Pave Collection, a range of fine sterling silver and vermeil jewellery set with diamonds.

Driving Monica’s ‘This is Me’ campaign forward, the new diamond collection is designed around classic jewellery box basics such as eternity bands, a delicate chain and micro pave bracelet and slider pendant set, diamond studs and an updated Fiji bracelet.

What we love – aside from the luxurious feel of the jewels – is that the Pave Collection rings are designed to fit with all of the stacking rings and work with all of the semi-precious stones in Monica‘s previous collections. ‘It’s all about layering and combining pieces from current and past collections, with a little added sparkle,’ explains Monica of her new venture. ‘I wanted to be sure I could offer diamonds that felt luxurious and worked with everything else in the range.’ Monica Vinader Diamond Jewelry Adorn London Jewelry Trends Blog

Total Look: Chanel’s take on colour-me-beautiful jewels

There’s no denying that Chanel’s inimitable creative director Karl Lagerfeld is a man who knows how to pick up on a trend. So when the models at this week’s Cruise 2013 presentation – amusingly entitled "Versailles in a Socialist France" -  appeared sporting jewels to match their pastel blue locks, we couldn’t help but wonder if Monsieur Lagerfeld has been getting his inspiration from the streets of London.

Whilst certainly not for the faint of heart, we applaud this look for its irreverent – not to mention bold – approach to personal expression and the way it updates the ‘total look’ approach to getting dressed up.

We’re also rather chuffed as ‘Blue For You’ is a jewellery trend we predicted last year on our jewellery trend analysis site Adorn Insight. It’s always nice to be proved right!

SS12 Jewelry Trend: Retro Florals

When it comes to horticulture, it’s the hybrids that tend to yield the most interesting blooms. Here at Adorn HQ we’ve taken this notion to heart and combined two current obsessions to come up with a look that’s perfect for the springtime sun.

First up is Prada’s gorgeous SS12 ad campaign shot by uber snapper Steven Meisel and featuring a host of sultry supes lounging around an old school gas station in vintage-feel floral prints and jewels. Add in the fact that this week sees the Chelsea Flower Show in full effect in London and it’s safe to say we’re having a flowery moment for which we’ve pulled together a suitably floral outfit.

Easy Step-By-Step

1. The temptation with floral based looks can be to pile it all on but beware, it’s a fine line between manicured border and overgrown wilderness. Starting with your clothes, select one standout piece, such as these gorgeous printed capri pants by Diane von Furstenberg at Matches, then complement with a one-tone top which echoes the floral theme in a subtle way. This daisy lace tank from Raoul is the perfect example. Add a bag with an oversized motif such as the reversible Willow tote from Orla Kiely so that scale becomes interesting, and add a dash of whimsy with flat footwear like these Roberto Cavalli acetate flower appliquéd sandals from Net A Porter.

2. Given that we’re working a retro theme, select jewellery which adds to the vibe in both style and appearance. Stacking rings reflect a sentimental mood where each piece tells a story – and rose buds are perfect for that back-in-the-day style – whilst delicate silk blooms bring a homespun feel into the mix.

3. If you’re going for earrings, consider studs rather than danglers to avoid a fussy neckline. Alexis Bittar’s pretty clip ons blend seamlessly with the vintage palette whilst the crystal embellishment adds just the right sprinkling of sunshine-catching glitz.

SS12 Jewelry Trend: SeaWorld

It appears that i am not alone in my dream of long, lingering summer days and seaside swims. When I asked our New York contributor, Amanda Pearl, to select her favourite SS12 trend from our jewelry trends page and create a hot list, she chose SeaWorld. The jewels Amanda has selected are from some of her favourite designers including an iridescent bubble Lucite bracelet from her own collection and a couple of our regularly featured designers on Adorn London too like Joomi Lim, Aurelie Bidermann and Irene Neuwirth.

Crowning Glory

To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Harrods has commissioned 31 designers from the worlds of fashion, beauty, jewelry and cuisine to create a bespoke crown. Given our particular interest in all things bling, we’ve picked our faves from the jewelry brand entries including Chopard’s quirky feathered owl, Solange Azagury Partridge’s rainbow hued glitterbug, Theo Fennell’s boudoir-esque beauty and a pair of snake themed crowns from Bulgari and Boucheron.

We feel certain Her Maj would approve.
