Dainty Necklaces: A wardrobe essential

style tip adorn london jewelry trends blog

Whilst the sun is shining and we start peeling off the layers and replacing turtlenecks with Ts, I thought it about time to talk about a piece of jewellery that I consider a ‘must-have’ – the dainty necklace. If there was a necklace you could wear every day, this is it. For a simple chic approach, wear the delicate chain and pendant combo on its own but to add versatility to your wardrobe, layer your look with different lengths of chain or add beads for a more holiday approach.

The dainty necklace is fast becoming a wardrobe essential, just like a pair of jeans and a white T, only this little number will last you a lifetime not just a season. Here are a few that made my hit list.

Jewellery Trend: Metal Mix

More than ever, and perhaps as a result of rising metal prices, we are seeing designers integrate a range of materials like silk cord, leather and braid into their jewellery pieces facilitating a relationship that focuses less on the metal and more on the mix. Across the board from fashion jewellery to fine jewellery, designers are implementing this new approach through innovative techniques that include age old crafts like weaving, plaiting and knotting. Here are a few of the brands that look ‘hot right now’ when it comes to a mixed media approach to jewels.

Style the Look: SS12 Jewellery Trends Global Warrior

style the look adorn london jewellery trends blog

LBD & Me

I thought it was about time to run a style series on Adorn London using an LBD and the SS12 trends highlighted on our Trends page to show you how jewellery can transform an outfit and how the same LBD can be accessorised differently to reflect a different mood or look. To launch the LBD & Me series, I have chosen Global Warrior as my style focus.

EASY STEP-BY-STEP

1. Take a simple black dress and decide on the main colours that support the theme, I have chosen tan leather shoes and a Tribal print handbag.
2. Think about the four main jewellery categories: Earrings, Neckwear, Wristwear and Rings and make sure your complement includes at least two of these pieces.
3. Think about the materials and colourways that will support your look. Tribal, for example, lends itself to horn, wood, semi-precious stones and other naturally found objects.

Today, to complete my Tribal look, I have chosen a banded agate, oxidised sterling silver and 18ct gold necklace by Belmacz; a horn bangle with brass rivets by Ashley Pittman and, still sticking with the main colourway and style, a 24ct gold plated scarab ring by Oscar de la Renta.

SS12 Jewellery Trend: Mellow Yellow

Ever since watching Breakfast at Tiffany, yellow diamonds have become my favourite of all precious stones. They remind me of sunshine and happy days and the golden lustre is so enticing and incomparable. Needless to say, when I stumbled upon these yellow diamond drop earrings by William Welstead, the pair went right onto my wish list – all 4.39 cts of them!

Eco-campaigner Livia Firth has launched her own eponymous label, LFD, with a piece of jewelry. The Skull necklace is made by hand in a small artisan co-operative workshop in Devon, using the ancient Egyptian technique of Lost Wax Casting for the exquisite detail in the moulded skulls. The necklace can be worn in a variety of ways and what is even more impressive is that Livia herself shows us how to style the look in a short video clip.

Kirsten Goss: Geo Grafik

the hot list adorn london jewelry blog kirsten goss geo-grafik collection
The official launch date is Wednesday 21st March, but I couldn’t wait to get these geometric jewels on the Adorn London ‘Hot List‘.  Brainchild of uber-chic Kirsten Goss, the Geo-Grafik collection oozes sleek geometric sophistication. Taking her cue from the ancient Greek study of geometry and astronomy, Kirsten took a considered, almost mathematical approach to this collection looking at the fundamental rules of shape. The ‘Orion’ necklace is the perfect bib style for the spring season: a static alignment of polished and textured forms, looking almost weightlessly suspended in a celestial sphere, ticking both urban graphic and galaxy-inspired trends. The dagger like ‘Pyxis’ studs along with ‘Radon’ and ‘Tantulum’ bangles are the perfect complement to the sports luxe lycras and wedge high-tops of ss12, whilst the 70s influenced ‘Octavia’ earrings with their sleek, rounded Scandinavian edges are a sassy fix for grown-up tribal accessorising.

This collection may at first seem a little serious, but designs such as the ‘Stellar’ studs and pendant, as well as the multi-coloured woven ‘Phoenix’ “squoops”, add the playfulness that is intrinsic to the brand. This is jewellery to be worn and enjoyed and although giving a gentle nod to the trends of now, as with Kirsten’s entire back catalogue, it has the ability to transcend seasons.

So take a look online or head over to Kirsten Goss’s newly made-over Holland Street boutique.

SS12 Jewellery Trend: The Lace Effect

lace fashionadorn london jewelry trends blog
The Fash pack are adding a contemporary spin to the traditional qualities associated with lace. Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen flirts with lace-like patterns whilst exploring new ways that ooze visual appeal as in her lace jacquard dress. For SS12, Topshop back lace dresses with saccharin shells and Valentino blurs the boundaries between underwear and outerwear in his cute lace shorts. But fashion is not the only genre giddy about lace.

The love affair has impacted the jewellery world too with designers across the globe exploring the delicate wonders of the fabric. Akong’s mixed media approach to jewellery is perfectly suited to mix in handmade lace with beads and crystal. Monica Vinader’s lace collection references her heritage and the idea of sentiment is stirred in the delicate lace patterns inspired by her Spanish grandmother’s mantillas. Laurent Gandini and Vanessa Tugendhaft use delicate cut-outs to communicate the effect of lace and immortalise the patterns in metal and stone whilst YSL embosses lace onto bold metal cuffs capturing the texture and pattern associated with the ancient craft.

SS12 Jewellery Trends: Check Mate

Adorn London Jewelry Trends blog
As jewellery is my passion, I get very very excited when a piece of jewellery inspires an entire outfit. Today it is the gingham plexi-glass earrings by Miu Miu that sit at the centre of my look. I have had my eye on these candy drops for sometime and I thought I would bring them out the bag as the sunshine promises to burn through the mist and the daffs line our streets in full bloom. So with the gingham pretties taking centre stage in white and blue check, here’s how I would…

Take the Miu Miu gingham and plexiglass clip earrings from Net-a-Porter and wear with a pair of White cropped jeans by Goldsign at Farfetch. Add a white ‘Faith’ blouse by Ralph Lauren at Farfetch with the frou-frou bow and finish with a pair of ‘Polly’ gingham flats by French Sole at the Outnet and canary yellow cardigan by PhaseEight.  Finally, head out to find that sunshine and perhaps buy a friend a bunch of daffs?
