Style the Look: Fairytale Jewellery

On Friday, I took my daughter to see Sleeping Beauty at the Royal Opera House, after enjoying a Madhatter’s Tea at Philippe Starke’s interior styled Sanderson Hotel in Soho. We sipped ‘Drink Me’ potions and marvelled at the ‘snap, crackle and pop’ of melting ice-cream balls and hot and cold lollipops. We enjoyed the rainbow-coloured sandwiches and pink Queen of Heart mousse cakes, before we made our way to the Royal Opera House.

We escaped, for the rest of the evening, into the enchanted world of a magical fairytale, mesmerized by the beauty of dance, jewelled costumes and dramatic stage sets…

Pippa Middleton shows a heart for Africa

Recently ‘papped’, Pippa Middleton’s choice of jewellery shows she has a heart for Africa. Pippa Middleton chose a pair of ‘Mwiba’ earrings from the ‘Laura Bailey for Made’ collection to wear at the ‘Too Many Women’ charity event this month. The simple yet stunning earrings were designed by Laura Bailey and are made from cast recycled brass. Made is a fair-trade fashion accessories brand, which creates beautiful, hand-made products in their African workshop.

On a separate occasion and still drawing inspiration from Africa, Pippa Middleton was spotted wearing the Summer Goddess Twisting Leaf Creole Earrings by Vinnie Day available exclusively at Astley Clarke. Vinnie Day’s jewellery is inspired by her childhood years spent living in the Great Rift Valley, her love for trees and organic design.

Style Tip: Channelling Cleopatra

Sass & Bide SS12

Cleopatra style and Egyptian references were all over the SS12 catwalk. The Sass & Bide brigade of statement chokers were particularly striking and one that stood out for me was the multi banded, tubular necklace adorning the neckline of Amanda Hendrick. For instant style status and a heads up on your summer look, I managed to track down something very similar thanks to the Dannijo duo.

Things I love: Prada’s Parures

Prada will be launching a limited edition capsule jewelry collection in November. Miuccia Prada experimented with different materials, juxtaposing resin and rhinestone to create these quirky parures presented in lush velvet boxes. This perfect ensemble oozes 50s sophistication and the opulence of an era steeped in glamorous sophistication.

My Wish List #5: Zaha Hadid

Zaha Hadid has long been an inspiration: the subject for my final year Art History paper at University was Deconstructivist Architecture, which featured Rem Koolhaus and the early years of Zaha Hadid.

Hadid’s approach to architecture explores a new modernity, creating buildings with multiple perspective points using fragmented geometry and the qualities of elasticity. Her architecture defies its own solidity, challenging our perception of space and creating the illusion of it changing as we pass through it. More intriguing is that she presented her drawings in the form of impressionist abstract paintings as she felt architectural drawings could not communicate the feel of her fluid spaces.

As the first woman to win the Pritzker Prize for Architecture, Zaha Hadid has made her mark on the global world of architecture and for me she is a legend in our time. Owning a piece of her jewelry, like the ‘Glace’ bangle she created for Swarovski would serve as a constant reminder of a woman who succeeded in pushing the boundaries between form and function.

Versace for H&M

Wild print, vibrant colour and flashy jewels are synonymous with Versace style on the Milan catwalk but this time Donatella has visited the archives to bring a taste of Versace to a whole new audience: the H&M customer. The collaboration follows on the back of previous sell-out campaigns with the likes of boho chic Brit designer, Matthew Williamson, and most recently the House of Lanvin under the creative direction of Alber Elbaz.

Whilst lush tropical prints and clusters of gold studs bring the ‘wow’ to Donatella’s shifts and leggings, I can’t wait to get my hands on a bit of Versace ‘bling’. The leather-look cuffs and flame red cocktail rings would add casino-cool to my poolside cocktail hour, how about you?

My Wish List #4: Tiffany 1837 Cuff

my wish list adorn london jewellery blog
Have I ever mentioned to you that I will be 40 in November? Well now that the secrets out, we can have some fun and I can talk about some of the fab-u-lous little things I have planned. Having said to my girlfriends that I really didn’t want any gifts and all I wanted was a knitted square from each of them to make up a ‘friendship’ blanket’, yesterday at a lunch a few got me thinking. They were asking the “what if?” and “is there any jewellery you would like?” kinda questions. You know the ones that instantly put you on the spot? Well, after much persuasion and coercion, I succumbed to their questioning and I gave in… “Okay”, I said in between insistent interjections that I only wanted a knitted square, “I would love a Tiffany 1837 cuff.” Silence followed and the lunch continued with much merriment but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to feature the silver bangle on my Adorn London ‘Wish List’… you never know, maybe my husband will read this!

From the shimmering pearlescent jewels and underwater setting at Chanel to the seabed statement cocktail rings at Versace and the flirty shell chandeliers at Holly Fulton, the ocean and all its glinting sea life references were a key inspiration for SS12. As Boticca celebrates its first birthday this week, I thought I would use the online designer jewellery portal and the vast display case of emerging designers, as my source for some tidal treasures.

Elsa Schiaparelli

Style the Look Elas Schiaparelli Adorn London Jewelry Blog
The Metropolitan Museum of Art confirmed last week that the Spring 2012 exhibition at the Costume Institute would be "Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion". With a sterling cast of creatives overseeing the exhibition from US Vogue editor, Anna Wintour to Great Gatsby director, Baz Luhrmann of New York, this is one not to be missed. Thomas P.Campbell, Director and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art had this to say about the joint exhibition: "Given the role Surrealism and other art movements play in the designs of both Schiaparelli and Prada, it seems only fitting that their inventive creations be explored here at the Met. Schiaparelli’s collaborations with Dalí and Cocteau as well as Prada’s current Fondazione Prada push art and fashion ever closer, in a direct, synergistic, and culturally redefining relationship." With Elsa on my radar, it is no surprise that I have been intent on adding a touch of Schiaparelli style to my wardrobe… and any of these would do.
